The third edition has been thoroughly updated and has a vast amount of new material, including plenty of new exercises and illustrations. There are some new chapters, and others have been brought up-to-date in light of the extensive work done in the decade since publication of the first edition.

Once again, I plead guilty to the charge that the material contained in this edition is more than can be covered in a normal, semester-long course.
